  1. There have been many periods of glaciation.

    After long periods of glaciation, the climate warms and the glaciers retreat. This causes new rivers and lakes to form. Some of these lakes might be quite large - the Great Salt Lake in Utah used to be a much larger body of fresh water, as was the Baltic Sea. Ice is very heavy and keeps land from rising. When the ice retreats, land rises and sea levels rise. This dramatically changes coastlines. You can see this happening now in Greenland, where melting ice is revealing islands where no islands were known before.

    These changes in climate change everything else. Vegetation changes, and if animals can't find the kind of food they're used to eating, they go extinct.
