  1. In the spdf-MO model, bonds for by atoms sharing electrons to satisfy their outer shell deficiency. Thus, O has 6 e's needs 8. H has one and so 2 H's bond with 1 O and the deficiencies are addressed if not completely satisfied. The bonds formed are sigma and pi in simple organic and inorganic compounds. The  octet model gives a good first-cut indication as to the bonds needed and formed. Electrons in bonds are assumed to occupy areas in between the atoms.

    Another model (MCAS), has bonding provide "back-side" protection for atoms. Thus, O has two unprotected (by an electron) regions - think of a box with two corners unprotected by an electron and the others protected. H atoms have one side unprotected.
