  1. This is a rather broad question because there are so many means at our disposal to identify these compounds.  In short, however, the more powerful and versatile techniques include high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) which separates compounds based on their mobility through a column of adsorbent material.  Also, we should include mass spectrometry which separates molecules based on their size (weight).  A given molecule will have a highly characteristic weight that can be used to identify it using database information.
