  1. Original balance of representatives favored the South.

    With an increasing population, the balance of power was shifting North, creating some resentment among the South.

    Tariffs were being decided that would favor the Northern Industrial powers instead of the southern plantations.  (North primarily exported and competed with imports.  South liked to import.)

    Arguments over states being admitted to the union set off the powderkeg.

    Buchanan's method of dealing with the problem was to ignore it.

    Lincoln is elected, who definitely favors the North.

    States secede.
