  1. They work the same way as in a cam in block engine. The only difference is that the push rods are eliminated. The cam sits on top of the buckets, also sometimes called followers, which act as the lifters. As the cam spins, the cam lobes push on the followers which then push down on the top of the valve to open it. As the cam continues to turn and the follower comes down the back side of the lobe, the pressure of the valve spring raises the valve back into the closed position.

    It's as simple as that. The cam(s) is still driven off of a chain or belt which is driven by the crank shaft. The only part that has actually been eliminated is the push rods.
