Describe the Mechanism of action of Penicillin.?

I was asked this question in my applied science exam, i am studying Business&Equine Studies, i basically do not understand wat the question is asking me for. Base your answer on horses.

  1. It inhibits the formation of peptidoglycan which is a layer in bacterial cell walls. As the wall weakens it causes cytolysis/death due to the osmotic pressure.


  2. Antibiotics like penicillin works on the bacterial cell wall, particularly inhibiting the formation of peptidoglycan cross-links in the bacterial cell wall. This weakens the cell wall of the bacterium (in other words, the antibiotic causes cytolysis or death due to osmotic pressure). It doesn't matter whether it is to be taken by human or horses, the mechanism remains the same.
