Describe the advice you would give a person who is selecting a proxy?

  1. Pick someone who you would trust with your life.. also someone intelligent and with common sense. You will be unconscious so the person will have to make decisions without consulting you, and if it involves something you haven't previously discussed with the intended proxy, the results could be disastrous if your most trusted person happens to be ignorant. This is of almost as much if not as much importance as trust.


  2. be sure it is a person who will respect your wishes regardless of their moral and ethical beliefs. Reason is, if you end up comatose on a ventilator and unresponsive you want to make sure your proxy will help guide your care how you want it......such as whether or not to continue life support,end of life isses,care and comfort or full treatment leading to tracheostomy and feeding tube......very important at any age for your loved ones to know your wishes.
