There is an entire discipline of biology devoted to the answer of this question:  biochemistry!  The brief answer is organisms have chemical pathways that extract energy from molecules to drive chemical pathways that synthesize molecules needed for life!  So chemical reactions are both exergonic (energy releasing) and endergonic (energy requiring)!

    Plants can carry out photosynthesis that produces food for the plant as well as for other organisms eating the plants and releases oxygen as a by-product.  Animals and plants use oxygen to extract energy from the molecules produced by the plants.
