  1. To add only a little to TR's answer, the chorus often foreshadows events to come, and points out conflicts within the scenes.  It might also be said that the chorus is like an omniscient narator at times.

  2. In Greek drama, there's not really a "dialogue" between the chorus and the main actors--except occasional the chorus leader may play a relatively minor part, like a herald or a passer-by.

Almost all of the time, the chorus danced and sung during interludes between the scenes that the three agonists played.  The songs that they sung were original material that provided commentary on the story of the play.  The chorus dances and sings about how men's curiosity leads to their downfall, how fate has a nasty way of biting one's backside, and finally how one should never call a man happy while he is still living since fate and fortune may turn against him.
