  1. There is some excellent material available in a book called "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" by one of the forensic anthropologists who was allowed to examine the bodies discovered in 1991.

    To answer your question, two children were missing at the recovery in 1991 Alexei was one, there has been some debate whether the second was Maria or Anastasia (most scholars believe Anastasia's remains to be with those found in 1991).

    Just recently, a second discovery was made that may be the two 'missing' children.
