  1. Africa as a continent is quite diverse. In the south you have South Africa where apartheid was overthrown in 1994 by DeClerk (Afrikaner) and Mandela (Black African). Zimbabwe was also controlled by whites until overthrown by Mugabe (1980's), who at one stage led his country to be called the Switzerland of Africa before destroying it by becoming a tyrant. Other countries in Africa faced severe dilemnas after independence from their European colonial overlords. The European powers failed to educate or train many of the black Africans so when they left, power went to at times innapropriate leaders such as Idi Amin of Uganda who had a military background in the British army. (That is of course not to say there weren't educated blacks, power just often went to the 'strongmen' or military men who had either served for or against the Europeans)

But asides from that, they have a low amount of development investment from outside companies or NGO's. They rely heavily on their armed forces to retain control of the country from rebel or seperate ethnicities. Remember Africa was 'carved up' by Europe so borders do not reflect distinct ethnic groups. It would be like carving a country out of a bit of France, Spain, and Germany.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is huge. Some countries in Africa have approximately 30 percent or more of their country with the disease. Many of these countries can not afford the drugs required to care for their sick.
