  1. Anyone can campaign to be the next president of the U.S., however it takes a lot a year of campaigning, millions of dollars, and permission from certain states.

    During the primaries, candidates compete against members in their own party for the party's nomination. The primaries are elections or caucusing within a state. The primaries start January 3, 11  months before the general election. As the primaries go on, candidates can and will drop out if they are not receiving enough votes (or delegates) at each primary to give them a fighting chance.

    The primaries culminate in the national convention in which the delegates are counted and the candidate with the most wins the party's nomination. That candidate then goes on to the general election.

  2. Nomination is basically the person(s) who are nominated as potential candidates for the party in the primary and general elections.

    Primary election is the election where the people select the person within each party that will come out as the leader of that party/representative of that party in the general election and will be the only person from that party running in the general election.

    The general election -- the winner of this election basically wins the office.
