  1. Some river courses may be divided into three stages.

YOUTH - some rivers rise from springs, while others start from lakes or melting glaciers. rivers flow down the steepest slopes of their entire courses. volume of water is usually small unless swollen by heavy rains or thawing snow an ice. material weathered from mountain and valley slopes tumbles into the youthful river's channel. fragments are pushed downwards and carve out V-shaped valleys.

MATURITY - as erosion continues the valleys become broader and gentler in slope. the river remains vigorous but downward erosion becomes less. mature rivers develop meanders (bends). the river erodes the outside bends but deposits material on the inside bends. mature rivers often look muddy.

OLD AGE - little erosion occurs but the volume of water is sufficient to transport large amounts of sediment. when the volume increases the water often overflows the banks. fine fertile silt is then spread over the flood plain. old age rivers often change course. most eroded material ends up on the sea bed, but along the coasts where sea currents are weak, the sediments may accumulate at the river's mouth in deltas.
