  1. I have never read this book.  I googled the title and found a very interesting read.

I think the main events would be the loss of his home and planet earth.  The discovery of his friends heritage, the journey's through space and meeting certain characters like Zaphod Beeblebrox, the very smart and pretty girl, Tricia McMillian, whom Arthur totally blew it with back on Earth, and a manic-depressive robot named Marvin.  Together these characters try to learn the Question to the ultimate answer of life, the universe and everything, and along the way face political foes, un imagination, fierce bureaucracy , love, thermo-nuclear missiles, a man named Slartibartfast with some interesting information about the Earth, and mice.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy concerns the exploits of Arthur Dent, an average British citizen who gets caught up in a myriad of space adventures when his house, and then the Earth, is demolished. With no planet to call home, he is left to hitchhike through space with his friend Ford Prefect, whom he thought was an out-of-work actor, but who is really a researcher for the intergalactic guidebook named in the title. Adams's book is one in which literally anything can happen, with the only rule being that what comes next will probably be the last thing the reader would expect and is bound to be amusing.

It looks like a trilogy of 4 parts.  After the initial story of the earth's demise, it then goes on to the adventures of him and his friend. Ford Prefect, is not from Guildford as he usually claimed during his fifteen year sojourn on earth, but actually from a small moon in the vicinity of Betelgeuse.  They are read bad poetry which is considered terrible torture, and they are almost sucked out an air lock into space. After almost being killed many times, and narrowly escaping at the end of each chapter, they join forces with Zaphod Beeblebrox (A two-headed cocky alien), Trillian (another worthless earthling) and Marvin (the depressed robot) to search for the answer to the meaning of life, which may have been hidden on the recently demolished earth."

The author makes characters with two heads to make the book entertaining. I liked it when Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian, Ford Prefect, and Arthur Dent all meet on the Heart of Gold for the first time. It is a very odd coincidence that they all know each other. I like how the book uses probabilities to explain how lucky or unlucky the characters are to have had an event happen

Arthur, for the most part, is simply along for the ride of his life; mostly distracted by his infatuation with Trillian, he pines quietly for her and pretends, successfully, to be unimpressed by the radical scope of the adventure into which he is cast. Ford, meanwhile, is the obvious catalyst for the meeting of the minds - and hearts - between Arthur, Trillian, and later, Zaphod, but never seems ancillary to the action; rather, he functions as proprietor of privileged information, doled out in sparing doses (which as chronicler for the Guide, he should be), and yet interacts as a companion and co-conspirator rather than fount of exposition. In the end, one glance at the mess of syllables that comprise the characters’ names confirm that very little of this universe was designed for the purpose of meaning very much

This looks like a book I would really enjoy. Go through the reviews and articles and see if you can put it together.  It looks like a great story.
