  1. I'm not sure you should already know whether you're high st or designer at this stage!!!  Just be yourself...even if that self changes from week to week!

When you put in your designs, try and put in your mood boards/inspiration as well. This shouldn't be just other designers, but might be a song or a season or a mood or occasion.

Show how much you know about what's going on in fashion now and in the past. If you've done something that reminds you of someone else's work, say 'I was really into Vivian Westwood's punk stuff when I did this' or 'I can't help but think of 50's Shiaperelli whenever I draw a hat'. If you've made something up, take it along. It's great to be able to say, 'I did the pattern for this and made it...I couldn't afford the silk so I used brushed cotton but I wore it to the prom' or whatever.

And just relax and be yourself. You've probably not had a chance to talk to other designers much before. Now you are going, in a real sense, home. Let your pleasure at being there show. Let your enthusiasm show. And if you're nervous, it's VERY cool to say, 'I'm sorry, I'm a bit nervous. This means so much to me, you see.'

I interview students all the time. I'm still never bored by those words.

  2. Make sure you really put your own personality into your presentation. They are judging not only your work, but you as well. By knowing who you are & what you're about, you can sell it. You've become your own marketing department and you can make yourself into your own unique brand.

If you are a 'high fashion' runway kinda designer make sure that your entire portfolio fits that theme. If your more laid back and relaxed, fit your portfolio style to the work.

Look at other portfolios and see what things catch your eye. Steal ideas you like on how to present your works. Remember: "Good artists borrow; Great artists steal. [And make it into something better, or at least something which is unique & utterly different than that from which it is torn.]"

I'd also make sure that everything is extremely professional. Very crisp and clean. Everything should be of high quality. No do it yourself, arts and crafts feeling.
