  1. In mitosis, there are, basically, 4 steps.  In the first step chromosomes become visible as formed bodies; #2 chromosomes make a single file line; #3 chromosome halves get pulled apart; #4 chromosomes group in a new nucleus.  The names of the steps are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

In meiosis, there are more steps.  In the first four steps, there are different events.  In the second set of four steps, the same events occur that occur in mitosis.    The names of the steps are prophase 2, metaphase 2, anaphase 2, and telophase 2.

In meiosis, the first of the phases (for names simply change 2 to 1) there are differences.  In prophase 1, the chromosomes group in homologous pairs (homologous means that the size, shape, and genes are the same).  In metaphase 1 the homologous pairs align in single file.  In anaphase 1 whole chromosomes get pulled to opposite sides of the cells.
