  2. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary actions.

    It has two branches, the sympathetic and the parasympatheic branches.

    Increased electrical impulses via the sympathetic branch causes stimulation and makes the body ready for action.. eg vasodilation of arterioles leading to the skin increases blood flow to those areas and the person's face becomes flushed.

    Also increased blood flow to p***s causes arousal.

    The parasympathetic branch has an opposite (antagonistic) effect. Increased nerve impulses via this branch return the body to normal state when activity is over.
