  2. You sure throw the questions out there when you want to know something. I can give a basic difference better than a technological one. Smelting is making iron from the iron ore. It means heat to melt the ore to separate it from the rocks and other impurities that would compromise the strength of solid iron. Smithing is the manipulation of the finished iron in to useful items. This involves heating iron, but not melting it. Iron is very brittle, and breaks under stress. Adding carbon to the smelting process makes steel which is stronger and is not brittle.
