  1. simple answer is they are lower on the food chain and therefore have more easily obtained energy.  when you eat the animal that ate the vegetable you reduce the energy efficiency of the vegetable by the added step in the chain.

    nutritional value, however, is not the same as energy efficiency.


  2. only about 10% is passed on through each trophic  level.  so hence vegetable is the primary producer  get 100%, the animal that feed on veggie/ plant get 10%, the predator that feed on that prey get 1% and bigger predator that feed on that predator get .1% & soooooooooo onnnnn..
