Looking at energy alternatives in school and need some facts on biofuel. eg. Advantages and disadvantages, How it works etc.

Thanks.

  1. The biggest problem about the bio fuel which is based on Bio Mass (ethanol and diesel) is that it uses  agricultural resources which can be used for food instead. That rises the price of food production. Another disadvantage is that one needs large areas in order to produce those kind of fuel for growing the agricultural feeding stock.

    That is important!

There are recent studies which show that the fertilizers that are being used for the production of the agricultural material pollutes more the environment than the equivalent amount of vehicles which are using standard (fossil) fuel.

Bio ethanol can be used in any kind of gasoline type of vehicles in a mixture up to 15% with common gasoline ( E85)

(E100) the 100% ethanol can be used in FFV (fuel flexible vehicles)

Bio Diesel can be used in any kinds of diesel types engines. It s major advantage is that it can be produced from oil residues.Like cooking oil from a restaurant.

  2. there are basically 3 kinds of bio fuel.

ethanol, this is alcohol it is made by fermenting sugars  which can come from wheat sugars  cane potatos etc

bio desil which comes from oils. it is made from any oily or fatty plants. palm oil is often used. the oil is broken into fatty acids and then the fatty acids are reacted with alcohols to form esters which are the bio fuel.

bio gas. methane mostly from garbage and sewerage.

    advantages

    theoreticaly carbon neutral.

    burn cleaner then fossle fuels

    renewable

    prolbams

often use fuoole fuels in there manufacture

    expensive.

(for the first 2) push up the price of food

  3. Biofuel (if cultivated, then also called agrofuel) is a basic abbreviation of biorganic fuel. This is a scientific name for any plant or animal substance that can burn (combustible (fuel) organism (organic) of two types (bi-), plant and animal). Biofuel is an alternative considered to replace petroleum gas (gasoline or petrol). Most transportation vehicles require high power density provided by internal combustion engines. These engines require clean burning fuels, which are generally in liquid form, and to a lesser extent, compressed gaseous phase. Liquids are more portable because they have high energy density, and they can be pumped, which makes handling easier. This is why most transportation fuels are liquids.

Biofuel is considered by some as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy security by providing an alternative to fossil fuels.

Biofuels are used globally. Biofuel industries are expanding in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The most common use for biofuels is automotive transport .

Biofuel can be theoretically produced from any (biological) carbon source. The most common by far is photosynthetic plants that capture solar energy. Many different plants and plant-derived materials are used for biofuel manufacture.

'First-generation fuels' refer to biofuels made from sugar, starch, vegetable oil, or animal fats using conventional technology.[12]

The most common first generation biofuels are listed below.

    Vegetable oil

    Biodiesel

    Bioalcohols

    BioGas

    Solid Biofuels

    Syngas

Many second generation biofuels are under development such as biohydrogen, biomethanol, DMF, Bio-DME, Fischer-Tropsch diesel, biohydrogen diesel, mixed alcohols and wood diesel.

Algae fuel, also called oilgae or third generation biofuel, is a biofuel from algae. Algae are low-input/high-yield (30 times more energy per acre than land) feedstocks to produce biofuels and algae fuel are biodegradable:

With the higher prices of oil, there is much interest in algaculture (farming algae).

One advantage of many biofuels over most other fuel types is that they are biodegradable, and so relatively harmless to the environment if spilled.
