Current USA usage suggests Grades I thru VI. Grade I being slow moving flat water and Grade VI being, impossible. Beginner paddlers tend to rate actual rapids higher than expert boaters. Ratings need be assessed against water levels.

Try American Whitewater Assoc.'s web site.  They have a pretty good explanation of the system.  Basically, class I through V is the American scale.  They can describe it best.
