Question:

Descriptions beyond Win, Place, and Show in racing?

In horse racing (and others), finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd is called Win, Place, and Show, respectively. I was wondering if anyone out there knows if there are other official descriptions for, say, finishing 4th, 5th, etc.?

  1. Nope.  These are the terms used to bet.... $10 to win, $5 to win, $2 to show.

  2. They are called unplaced. I have seen them called  "pulled up" "distanced" "refused" "brokedown" "dwelt" "eased" "bled" "bolted" "bore out" "bucked".   There are a few more but I just cant remember them at this time.  Hope this helps.

  3. Horses are paid thru 5th place.. So if a horse runs 5th or better he/she is in the money. 1st thru 4th is lit the board. In a superfecta (picking 4 in order) if your horse is 1st thru 4th..he/she is in the super. Anything that runs after 5th place is known as "also ran"

  4. Here in Australia providing there are 8 starters or more if you back a horse for a place you get a dividend if your selection runs 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

You can also have a bet called a' first 4 'which requires a punter to pick the first four place getters in a race. The dividends are usually quite good and you can box your selections and nominate the amount you wish to invest.

EG. Box the numbers 2,3,5,7 @ $10 and if your selected numbers run 1st to 4th in any order you will collect 41% of the full dividend.

  5. It' is simply just called 4th place, 5th place etc. Although most races do have a purse for 1st - 5th place.

  6. they can be called un-placed horses! or donkeys!
