Question:

Desert Eagle Recoil?

I want to rent a .50 cal Desert Eagle from my gun range, but I am worried about the recoil. I'm 5' 9'' and 120 pounds. I can handle a firearm fairly well. I have shot 38 special with a very small revolver and .45 with a 1911 to name a few pistol calibers I have handled well. How does the recoil compare to the calibers listed that I shot?

I'm also considering trying the S&W .50cal revolver with the 4'' barrel. Anyone know how the recoil on this compares to the Desert Eagle?

Don't waste your time telling me how the Desert Eagle is a useless gun, because I already know that. I just want to try it out for the experience.

  1. As the old saying goes, "Hike up your skirt and pull the trigger!"

The Desert Eagle .50 AE will have less recoil than a S&W .50 with a 4" barrel.

I've shot both guns but the S&W had an 8" barrel.

    Want to feel recoil?

Shoot a Stoeger Coach Gun (12 guage side by side shotgun that will hold 3 1/2" magnum rounds) both barrels at once. You will appreciate recoil then!

The bruise on my shoulder lasted for three weeks!

Just asking: Why do you want to fire these guns? You should never need more than a .44 Magnum in a handgun.

  2. The .50AE is the sharpest recoiling Desert Eagle.  What it does is cause severe muzzle flip if you do not keep your wrists stiff.  The ejected brass can actually hit you in the forehead or face.   You need to keep your wrists stiff and allow your arms to raise up and shoulders to roll back a bit.

I personally see the .50AE as more of a novelty when compared to the .500 S&W Magnum which is a serious hunting round.    The noise and flash is impressive with the DE, especially when you are standing to the side  and you are in an enclosed range.  The blast and flash of the .500 with a ported 4" barrel is incredible and worse than the actual recoil which I percieved to be less than my .454 Super Redhawk.

None of the other calibers you fired will be anywhere near comparable to the .50 AE, but you should be able to handle it.

  3. the .500 doesnt recoil as much as people think it does i've got 20 pounds on you, im not saying my palm wasnt a little sore, but smiths scandium guns kick more IMHO. the 12ounce .357 is a beast. the desert eagle would most definatly kick less i am assuming you are talking about the .50AE, since it comes in a few other calibers. the 50AE is a smaller round.  i heard from many and agree that a .454 kicks more.

  4. Desert Eagle at buck-twenty?  It’s going to knock you on your A$$!!! :)  But you should get it anyways.  Don’t worry – you’ll grow to love the gun despite it’s kick, plus it’s a great conversation piece – and no one argues with you during those conversations!

  5. The S&W .500 Mag. will have more recoil than the Desert Eagle and work better for you.  The Desert Eagle is not known for dependability as if you don't hold it just right it will jam.  Recoil will be there but the heavy frame damps a lot of the perceived recoil.  Honestly, a .45 acp will serve you better for defense.  For hunting the Magnum will work better.

  6. Yesterday i saw someone shooting the desert eagle and theres not as much recoil as everyone thinks there is. its really loud and there is a quite bit of kick but i think you can handle it.

    PS: gain some weight

  7. I shot the desert eagle at a place in Worcester , MA I am 5'9" and weight 230.  I have shot many guns and shoot a 44 and 45 regularly with no problem, and with the DE I took pretty much every shell off of the forehead.  Not a fun gun to shoot

  8. Oh, there's going to be significant difference in recoil when you shoot the .50 Desert Eagle.  It's not unmanageable though.  It's not a worthless gun at all.  I like them, but I don't want to fork out for ammo all the time and I wouldn't shoot enough to warrant reloading either.  They are fun to shoot though.

If you're worried about the recoil, shoot the .44 mag Desert Eagle first.

    Have fun shooting them!
