  2. Hello!  Well, a desert is a really harsh environment that receives very little rain, but it does have a few good features.  First of all, some deserts contain very valuable mineral deposits.  Also, because of the extreme dryness, deserts are ideal places for natural preservation of artifacts and fossils.

Plant and animal life might seem nonexistent in a desert, but actually it's quite diverse.  Many drought tolerant plants can even store water in their leaves or roots (like the cactus.)

When desert lakes dry up, the salt in these lakes hardens forming what's called a playa, and many can be found in North America - like the salt flats of Utah.  These vast, flat areas of land are excellent areas for testing high-speed vehicles.

Lastly, many of the world's oil reserves are found in arid regions, though these areas only became deserts relatively recently.  Ghawar, the world's largest and most productive oilfield is mostly under one of the largest sand deserts in the world which is located on the Arabian peninsula.

    Hope that helps!
