  1. That's where the doldrums are. Those are areas of high pressure/sinking air. Sinking air prevents clouds from forming and quite often it the do form they aren't large enough to produce rain thus creating a desert environment


  2. The majority of the water that turns into rain is evaporated along the equator 0- 20 degrees .By the time it rises and cools enough to fall it has traveled beyond the 30 degree range.

  3. The middle of the globe is naturally closer to the sun. Not the only factor of course but, it's mucho hotter on the equator because it is closer to the sun and stays closer to the sun year around while the upper and lower hemispheres move closer and draw away during the different seasons due to the way the Earth rotates on it's axis.

  4. Because this is the latitude (roughly) of the sub-tropical anticyclones.

    This is the area of descending air between the Hadley Cell and the Ferrell Cell in a simplified model of the atmospheric circulation.

    Descending air --> no clouds --> no rain --> desert.
