Design of the Daegu 2011 commemorative coin made public – Athletics news
As the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011 approaches, organisers are leaving no room to attract and entice athletics fans from around the globe towards the event. In a recent attempt, the local organising committee has made the design of a special edition
of commemorative coins of the event public. The coin will be formally issued by the Bank of Korea on August 11, about sixteen days ahead of the commencement of the 13th World Championships in Athletics.
The coin, which is being issued to mark the grandeur of the world championships, weighs about 19 grams and has a diameter of about 33mm. According to the news made public, each coin will be made up of 99.9 percent pure silver, which will depict a frosted
and polished appearance. In order to hint towards the indigenous cultural element of the host nation, one side of the coin will represent local elements of the official emblem, which will display the image of an athlete crossing the finishing line wrapped
in the colourful swirls marking Daegu’s colourful brand. The other side of the coin carries an image of a High Jumping athlete along with a curve of the track.
According to news, organisers have planned to issue about 30,000 coins for the public, a major part of which will remain in Korea. Since the number of coins is limited while the demand for them is escalating, it has been decided by authorities that in order
to acquire a coin, one would have to apply for it in two banks, which will be designated by the Bank of Korea, which is also the minting authority. The applicants selected by the banks will start receiving the commemorative coins from August 23, four days
ahead of the inauguration of the event.
Out of this total number of coins issued by the minting authority, only 3,000 will be sold to the fans of the event in selected territories, which, at present, are comprised of China, Japan, Germany, Netherlands and USA. International collectors interested
in buying the coins have been guided to apply through the Korea Minting & Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO). The distribution of the coins to the selected international applicants will start from August 18. If the demand for the coins exceeds the supply,
the names of the successful applicants shall be decided through a ballot.
