Designers! I need decor ideas for basement?

Our basement partially finished and I was thinking of how I could cover up the water softener and furnace (they are right by each other)

They are in the right hand corner of the media room

Any ideas?

  1. create a wall of cabinets, some with doors, some with shelves only.  the water softener and the furnace in one of the closed cabinets...doors give easy access.  open shelves, drawers, cabinets give you a place for decorative accents and concealed storage, as well as some graphic/ visual interest.  you can create a very even grid effect, or possibly a Mondrian effect by using different sized openings.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mondr...

  2. how about a room divider or two in a style of your choice and a height that will cover all of the upper portions?  or a curtain on a circular ceiling rod that might match the rest of the room or camouflage into the room?

  3. privacy screens?

or perhaps tall bookcases (that wont tip over) to block the utilities from view and yet still allow access for mechanical reasons.

If you can imagine facing the wall they reside on. Place a couple of tall bookcases in front of them (with enough room to get into) then place another one to the side of the units that would fall in line with the closer bookcases you may have an interesting effect. Then a simple privacy screen (mobile unit on casters). that will block the entry into the makeshift utility room. Michele
