Desk top material; old drafting desk chipped edge?

i have an old drafting desk the top and side is chipped its got wood in the middle of 2 other layers and little fibers are in the 2 top and bottom layers could this be asbestos im just wondering whether i should pitch it . did they use asbestos for wood products or just in concrete products

Asbestos was typically used as an insulator.  I don't see any function like that going on with your table so it is more probably wood fibers.  If you are worried though, you could coat it in plastic or something else to keep the threads from coming out from that point.  I also believe the amount of exposure would be so small as to be insignificant.
