Desperate Dex stronger than stable mate, Big Fella Thanks, in the Betfred Becher Handicap Chase
Trainer, Tom George and the owners, Crossed Fingers Partnership, have plans of targeting the Betfred Becher Handicap Chase at Aintree through, Big Fella Thanks and Desperate Dex.
Until October, 2010, the ten-year-old bay gelding, Big Fella Thanks, raced for Paul Nicholls’ stable and then stayed with trainer, Ferdy Murphy, until October, 2012.
He has been a part of three Grand Nationals sponsored by John Smith and the only time he was able to rank the best, fourth, was when he was under the supervision of trainer, Paul Nicholls.
He cracked open the 2012 season as getting entered in the Betfred Mobile Sports Veterans’ Handicap Chase on 27th October, 2012 at Aintree race course over three miles and a furlong.
"The plan has been for Big Fella Thanks to run in the Becher Chase since he came back into training," said George.
"He had a run round the other day. It didn't quite go to plan, but he gave himself a good blow and he's none the worse for it. I'm looking forward to it and he's had a good preparation."
Big Fella Thanks unseated the jockey, Paddy Brennan, the last time he raced and he is being expected to deliver way higher than the race that presented him with the first challenge of the running season.
On the other hand, his stable mate, the twelve-year-old bay gelding, Desperate Dex, has been unbeaten in the last two outings. The Irish bay gelding had his most recent success in the penetration race for the 2012 campaign.
He won the Discount Tyres Handicap Chase on 7th November, 2012 at Chepstow race course over three miles.
He defeated For The Staff by fourteen lengths with jockey, Paddy Brennan, onboard.
"We've just given him an entry in case Exeter on Friday is off," said George. "He's owned by the same people as Big Fella Thanks and they are coming over from abroad. He's more likely to run at Exeter."
The latter option seems to be the more reliant one for the stable and is far more tuned-up for landing the race and coming back to the stable with the title.
The field will also see Tim Vaughan trained, Saint Are.
