I'm 13, nearly 14 nd since i was 11 ive had the most terrible migraines! what usually happens is i wake up at about 6am with a small headache. soon after, the headache gets far worse and i feel sick. i have to go straight back to bed and try to fall asleep in a darkened room, unless i throw up. its so hard to get back to sleep though, because my head is so sore. soon enough i have to get up and run to the toilet to be sick. after i get sick, the headache immediately stops and i feel better. but sometimes, i have to be sick twice before the headache stops.

occasionally, migraines just happen during the day. its starts when i see flashing lights. soon after, i feel sick and headache and the process starts all over again.

i have a suspicion that drinking hot chocolate causes migraines, so i stopped drinking it but it didn't work.

Also, i went to my doctor and he gave me beta blockers but i can't always remember to take them and they don't work very well anyway.

I've missed lots of school because i feel so drained after a migraine that i can't go. it's really getting in the way of my life and i want it to stop.

does anyone have any advice, or maybe know whats causing it?

All help is greatly appreciated!

  1. I agree with buildypuss, you need to see a specialist about this, to have tests done.

  2. yeah, go to a specialist and dont let it get in the way of your life. your still only young, when you older you will be kicking yourself that you didnt get it sorted as a child so you could get proper education. If its flashing light causes it sometimes it could be something to do with epilepsy.

  3. I think that your doctor ought to recommend you to see a specialist at the hospital.

  4. Apparently migraines can be brought on in some people by cheese and other dairy products. You could try cutting them out of your diet for one week at a time. So say cheese one week, milk the next etc And see if that helps.

  5. My Dad gets really bad cluster migraines with flashing lights and sickness and the moment he gets one he has to lie down in a darkened room. He doesn't get them for months and then he'll get loads seemingly out of the blue! My Mum and I are convinced he is prone to them when stressed though, when he's worked up we can tell he's likely to get one. Do you get stressed out a lot? He went to the doctors and now has pills to take the moment he feels one coming on and they seem to do the trick for him. Don't know the name I'm afraid - it would be best to go back to your GP and discuss. I'm certainly not a doctor but I'm sure there must be better things than beta blockers to treat migraines. Also in terms of diet, my Dad was told to avoid cheese, alcohol, chocolate, caffeine and nuts. As you're still young it might be due to hormones and growing/periods?? Sorry I'm rambling on...! xx

  6. have you started your periods - if you have it could be related - i read an article recently that said some migraine is hormonal and there is research recently done.  don't know where you live but i used to be

prescribed imigran which worked but were hard to keep down as

i also was sick these worked. once my periods stopped so did my migraines!. you can buy imigran over the counter now but i suggest

you go back to the doctor  - in the mean time try some really strong

paracetamol or asprin. in the worst cases they can give you injections.

don't give up emphasize how badly you are affected by it.

food can cause them like chees chocolate red wine(you're too young)

but one of this made any difference to me.

mention the hormonal/period thing - he may then be able to help.

    good luck
