Despite injuries Travis Meyer finds his place for the 2012 Australian squad – Cycling News
Meyer was excited about his involvement in the team as he mentioned that Green Edge has supported him in a way no other team could possibly have and he has developed a good understanding with the management.
Meyer is hopeful that if he hits his form back he can be selected for the Olympics squad along with Cameron and Jack as he said, “Joining Green Edge gives me the best possibility of riding at the Olympic Games in 2012.”
Travis’s performance in the previous year has been outstanding as he has dominated the junior world titles by winning five times and won the Australian road title in his first appearance. He is recovering from the injuries at the moment and is hopeful of
being back in action soon.
Meyer has undergone a surgery on the left external artery while he was racing in Bayern-Rundfahrt and the level pain in his left leg rises during time trials and climbing stages as he stated, “The pain in my left leg got so bad that after about five minutes
into a TT, I would barely be able to use my left side.”
Blood flow in his leg was stopped due to the narrowing of his external iliac artery as it was found after examining the cyclist. In the year 2002 something similar happened to Stuart O’ Grady who was also treated after the surgery.
Meyer’s surgery was done on his birthday, June 8 and he was hospitalised for a week followed by five more days in the hotel in Lyon before he finally moved to his apartment in Girona. He was prescribed by the doctor to stay off his bike for two months to
avoid any serious complications with his leg.
Despite his injuries, team manager for Green Edge Shane Bannan, has shown faith in the cyclist by including him in the Australian line up along with Jack Bobridge and Cameron for 2012.
Meyer explained that the bigger challenge he is facing right now is not to rush things and be patient until he is fit to race.
