Despite misunderstanding marring the game, Mike Matheny celebrates victory – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, June 26, beat the Miami Marlins 5-2. However, despite the victory, there were a few things which essentially distracted Mike Matheny’s focus from celebrating the win.
It all happened when he had an exchange with home-plate umpire Bob Davidson with regards to a double switch. The misunderstanding occurred in the ninth inning, something apparently perfectly avoidable.
However, the brief mix-up brought about a few moments of displeasure. Be that as it may, the team scored their final victory despite the tough challenge they faced in the game by the Miami Marlins.
Special as the win was, the team manager Mike Matheny was not particularly pleased with the misunderstanding. "The more I mulled over it, the more I realized what a special win it was," Matheny said. "It's a shame the other things distracted from what a real good win that was."
The team manager shed further light on it, trying to explain what actually led to an otherwise avoidable confusion and subsequent misunderstanding.
"At some point there, something got garbled up and I'm trying to go out and get the pitcher off the mound to make the change, and to me, that's the opportunity that if I did say, 'Five-hole,' that's it. I'm not denying that that may have happened. I believe Bob's taking a lot of heat right now, and I don't think that's necessarily deserved."
It was not all about the home-plate umpire and Mike Matheny alone. The Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen had his version to present which led to the ensuing mix-up.
All things considered, the team has got a 2-0 lead in the three-game series, beating the Marlins by 8-7 and 5-2. The Cardinals finally seem to be back on the track again after the brief slump that was earlier witnessed.
How the Cardinals maintain their grip in the days to come will be of crucial importance for the team. If they manage to have the same dominance, they will comfortably end up leading the Division before the All-Star break.
