Despite rumours, Darrelle Revis situation still status quo
There have been reports this week that the New York Jets and Darrelle Revis were moving close to reaching a new deal, but according to Jets’ owner Woody Johnson, no progress has been made. Both the Dallas Morning News and the New York Daily News reported that the two sides should reach a deal soon, but close sources have said that no progress has been made towards a new deal.
"We've sworn not to talk about it but I don't know where this stuff is coming from. It's not done until it's done," Johnson said.
The two sides had promised two weeks ago that all discussions would be kept private. It is unlikely that Revis would accept one of the offers the Jets have given him when you look at his representatives’ strong stand this offseason. Revis has still not reported to training camp, and the holdout is approaching its fourth week. Revis is being fined $16,000 for every day that he does not report, and the bill is racking up.
Revis seeks a long-term contract that would make him the highest paid cornerback in the league. That would mean he’d have to earn more than Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders. He’s currently under a three-year deal worth $15.3 million a season. Revis has asked for a ten-year contract worth $162 million. The Jets have offered Revis a $122 million deal over ten years and a short term deal worth $40 million over four years.
Revis’ agents have received interview requests, but have turned them down, keeping the affair a private matter with the Jets. Revis means a lot to the football team and the Jets would certainly like to have him back; especially with the team having such high expectations.
While some media outlets have reported progress, closer sources to the team and the league have all indicated that the sides are still at a standstill in the deal. With the regular season set to kick off for the Jets on September 13th, that date will come fast and the Jets will want Revis on the field. So far, that has looked unlikely as both sides have not come close to a deal in over six months of negotiations.
