Dessie Hughes needs a big win to bounce back
Trainer Dessie Hughes has managed to win numerous events in his career, but things have been a bit disappointing for him over the past few years. He has not won any major race since 2009 and needs a special effort in order to break the shackles.
After making his debut in the sport, the veteran trainer managed to win his first major race in 2003. His gelding, Central House, was victorious in the Denny Gold Medal Novice Chase (Grade 1), which had a cash prize of £42,208.
This gave a lot of confidence to Hughes and he had a decent time during the next season. He won three more Grade-1 events that year and the most important one of them was the Smurfit Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy Class A Grade 1, which helped him earn
a cash prize of £174,000.
The next couple of years did not prove to be much lucky for the hard working trainer and he managed to win just a couple of big events during this time period. His efforts paid off in 2007, as he succeeded in a couple of Grade-1 races during that year.
He followed that up with a couple of more important victories in the next two seasons, but he has been unable to make any big impression since then. His last major victory was in the Boylesports.com Champion Novice Chase (Grade 1).
Hardy Eustace proved to be the most successful trainee for Hughes, as he managed to win four important events during his career.
The Irish gelding started his career in 2002 and continued racing until 2010. He participated in 49 events during this time period, winning 14 of them whereas finished as a runner up on 11 occasions. In addition to that, he also secured the third spot on
six times.
Although, things have not been positive for Hughes over the past few years, yet he has given some hope to his fans with a victory in Ladbrokes Munster National Handicap Chase (Grade A).
French runner Raz De Maree was the one who finished on top of the table in this event and he seems to be a ray of hope for his trainer, who will be looking to have a strong season in 2013.
