Question:

Destination wedding, best place in US Virgin Islands?

I am completely enamored with the Virgin Islands. I'm planning a detail-oriented 'chic modern' wedding of ~50 guests. I would like to find a somewhat secluded or exclusive place (no megaresorts like Wyndham, Sandals, Atlantis) on USVI that will fulfill my dream.

Musts: allow children, great service, & comfortable accomodations with no outdated decor (ex. those horrible multicolor/patterned bedsheets of the 80s). Being foodies, we also need a place that has reliably tasty food with flair (i.e. gourmet twist on seafood & caribbean fare).

My favs so far: Caneel Bay & Little Dix Bay (BVI)

USVI preferred to BVI since easier for guests, but I welcome all recommedations!!

  1. I visited St. Thomas and St. John Islands last year, staying at the Frenchman's Reef Marriot.  It's really a nice resort (try going to Trip Advisor and looking up that hotels website -- the pics and information are accurate).  While there, they had several weddings.  They have a lovely place for the actual wedding; it's outdoors with a lovely setting (the only negative is I don't think you could get 50 guests into the area to view it).  But they still have a lot of other options available for the actual wedding.  As far as the receptions and food, they're top notch.  You'll get your own private terrace, and the food the make is superb.  They have a wedding organizer, and they'll handle EVERYTHING YOU ASK FOR, and dont' worry, they're prepared, rain or shine (don't worry, there's very little rain there; the chances are highly remote, to say the least.    It's a a little expensive, but you won't find a better hotel than that in the US Virgin Islands.

PS:  Both the Hotel and the Morningstar Resort are the same:  you have full access to either, whichever place you stay.  The pool by the beach is just beautiful.   So are the other ones, up near the main hotel.  There are a lot of stairs; it's set on a cliff on a penisula overlooking the harbor (GET A HARBOR VIEW ROOM, not an Ocean view room).  And since it's on a penisula, you'll be surrounded on three sides by some of the most beautiful views of the ocean you'll ever see.

  2. I always agree with Stella on the island of St. John, and by the way, she knows the USVI's.

I love St. John for it's beauty and peacefullness. I would suggest renting a villa for your wedding and/or reception.  If money isn't an object, there are a few luxury villas that are gorgeous.

I don't know if you are you using a wedding planner, but the planner linked below has a great reputation for attention to detail and personalized service .  Please note that I have not personally worked with her.  The site alone has good information for weddings in St. John.

    Congratulations and best of luck!

--- just remembered...Rhumb Lines restaurant serves outstanding Thai and Szechuan, with an emphasis on seafood --  http://www.rhumblinesstjohn.com/

  3. My pick is St John. To me, it's a lovely place to have a destination wedding. No mega resorts lining the beaches.

Caneel Bay is lovely and the best resort to have a wedding but it's also very expense for your guests. Lovely for the the Bride and Groom, put the guests somewhere else unless money is not a issue.

Check out Gallows Point Resort. Just minutes away from Cruz Bay and wonderful restaurants. ZoZo Restaurant is located there and it's one of the finest places to dine on St John. The views are wonderful. Your guests will love this place.

Many guests rent homes/villas on St John. They are some beautiful homes with 3/4/5 bedrooms. Check out this site.

There are many rental managing companies on St John and you can just search the web "villa rentals on St John USVI". You will get links to many rental companies.

    Good Luck and congratulations)
