Destinee Hooker named as the Sportswoman of the Year 2011 – Volleyball news
The senior outside hitter/opposite of the US Women’s National Volleyball Team, Destinee Hooker, has been named as the Sportswoman of the Year 2011 in her home town, San Antonio.
This is the third year in row that she has settled for the top player’s award in her area. Hooker is a multi-talented athlete, who has been attached with the American national team since 2008. She is always in the front row of attackers and can be easily
spotted as an active player on the court. During 2011, she managed a stellar performance and contributed to the overall success of the US team.
Most recently, Hooker helped the US team to earn an Olympic ticket. American team competed in the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Cup in Japan and finished second in the tournament. As far as Hooker’s performance was concerned, she averaged 5.91 points per set and
also proved her endeavours in other respects of the game.
She emerged as sturdy blocker, excellent digger, and good all-around player. In a match against China on November 6, 2011, she scored 39 points. Likewise, she was credited with 24 points in the next match against Italy. Overall, Hooker was third-best scorer
of the tournament with 185 points in total. Overall, she played a big role in helping the US team to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
She was also part of the American team, which secured gold medal at the 2011 NORCECA Continental Cup in Puerto Rico. American musketeer, Hooker, emerged as the third-best scorer of the campaign and ranked fourth in best spiker’s category.
Before that, she put up a valiant effort for the team at 2011 FIVB Grand Prix. She finished as the second-highest scorer in the competition, while USA got hold of the title trophy. Because of her efforts and hard work, she was named the Most Valuable Player
(MVP) of the FIVB World Grand Prix.
USA coach Hugh McCutcheon did not show any sign of surprise as he got to know that Hooker earned honour of being named as Sportswoman of the Year in San Antonio.
He said, “Once you get to know her and you understand her drive and competitive nature, it's not surprising. Athletically, she's a very special talent.”
It was indeed a great comment by the coach of US team. It really justified that no one deserved this honour better than Hooker.
