Destruction of the Universe?

In the August (2008) issue of Discover, an article called "What fills the Emptiness" puts forth the thoeries of drawing off energy from a vacuum. The intention is to power nano machines and such. The energy is derived from quantum particles existing in their virtual state in the emptiness. It is proven to exist from the Casimir effect.

A possibility from doing so, is that reducing the voids energy, which is already at it lowest, might destroy the entire universe at the speed of light. Its just thoeretical, but this is the first I have heard any method that our species has thought up a proposal that can destroy all of everything. Destroying our planet is standard operating proceedure for us. Is this mankinds first thoery ever of how to end it all for everthing that exists?

  1. I've heard about this and even though I think it is a big discovery...it certainly isn't our job to be role playing as gods...experimentation might be good but nit when you don't know what the ultimate outcome might be...especially with something as big as this.

  2. No, if you look at what we are doing now, we are destroying our species. Not as quickly granted, and it wont destroy the universe, but it will kill us all.

  3. Be sure to read all the qualifications on the 'destroy the universe' scenario.  I'm not holding my breath.
