hi. my name is Diana and i am 14 years old and have been vegetarian for a month. i have been living off of stir-fri's that my mom makes and fruits and vegetables, but i want to remain vegetarian for the rest of my life, and i don't think that the way that i am going is very good or healthy. i am the only vegetarian in the household, and we are going grocery shopping soon. i just wanted to know what to buy on our next grocery trip and where to buy it. i am a lacto-ovo vegetarian so things in that nature would be helpful. thanks a million for the people who would like to help...

oh..btw i am Mexican, so if that gives you an idea..that would be GREAT!

thanks =]

  1. I have also been a lacto-ovovegetarian for a month one week and one day. It's very rewarding isn't it? I'm only thirteen Ok well I would suggest over the internet getting some vegetarian starter guides which in the have vegetarian food pyrimids. Mexican food mmmm. Well the new online rice are only a buck and half them are vegetarian. Get some toca shells hard or soft and then stuff the shells with the rice. Or get some fat free refried beans or fritos beans (most all bean dips have lard) then heat that up you have to use your own cheese because I haven't find an vegetarian cheese dip because they put lard in it melt the cheese over the bean dip put some tomatos sour cream ect. and it's very good. You shouldn't live off it though.

Stuff mushrooms are very good. Buy some baby portellbella mushrooms and take out the stem or root buy some cornbread stove top stuffing and then make the stuffing and stuffed the mushrooms and the you can grill them or heat them in the stove.

morning star has so many subsitutes for meat including burgers and wings and burritos only $3.

make homeade spanish rice with tomatos and then have penut butter bread with it

these are only a few of the thousands of Ideas you can make

  2. i love mexican food too! usually tacos are loaded w/veggies.pecodigio(not sure if spelled right) i make fresh veggie salad w cauliflower,broccoli/green onion(if u like.baby carrots, marinate in italian dressing overnite,is scrumptious!

  3. Well pretty much any meal can be turned into a vegetarian dish, make sure you have lots of protein such as

    chickpeas,

    houmous,

    baked beans,

    mushrooms,

    lentils,

you can also get loads of pre made vegie meals (vegie burgers, hotdogs etc, they are pretty tasty)

http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/collecti... <-- this is the site I go if i ever want to make something. Remember to keep up your iron levels too... I can't remember anything but spinach and nuts that has iron atm but I can assure you there is more than that. good luck ^^

  4. if you can, get some of the "fake" meats.... morningstar farms, boca and gardenburger all make a ton of soy versions of meat products.... you can get hot dogs, burgers, chicken nuggets, steak strips, ground meat, sausage, etc!  try them out and try them different ways... they give you the protein you need, are healthier than meat, and i think, taste great!  my bf eats meat but he loves eating the soy versions instead now.... we use the ground "meat" crumbles by morningstar to make burritos and tacos, add to pasta sauce for "meat" sauce, put in mac and cheese for a "hamburger helper" type meal... i'll make veggie burgers with a side of sweet potato fries.... have a hot dog at a bbq just like everyone else... i'll make a chicken parm using the patties and covering with sauce and mozz cheese.... put the chicken strips in a stir fry... have the steak strips with a potato and veggies... you can use this stuff to just sub in for a lot of meals your used to.

also try some new stuff... buy some tofu and beans... mix it up... i like making my own salsas now and always add black beans. i use tofu instead of eggs and soy sausage for a breakfast scramble... mix it up and throw things together... buy lots of veggies.... i like raw veggies dipped in hummus and i stock up on frozen veggies.... make some soups... minestrone is easy... get some veggie stock and throw in your favorite veggies... experiment with salads too!

  5. FIRST!

Make a wide variety of vegetables in many different colors tops on your list. Vegetables are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants vital to a healthy vegetarian diet.

    Step2

Stock up on whole grains, including oatmeal, brown rice, wheat pasta and high-fiber cereal to ensure you eat enough complex carbohydrates, fiber and protein.

    Step3

Ensure that you purchase several different kids of fruit, which are rich in beta carotene, fiber and vitamin C.

    Step4

Plan to buy plenty of beans, chickpeas and lentils, which provide protein, iron, zinc and fiber for your vegetarian diet. These foods can replace meat in some dishes you make.

    Step5

Add some pre-packaged vegetarian options to your grocery list for those days when you don't feel like cooking. Tofu cutlets, pre-made salads and bean burgers are all quick and healthy selections.

    Step6

Write down a reminder to buy such pantry staples as peanut butter for added protein and fat, tomato sauce for pasta dishes, vegetable broth for soups and stews and couscous and kasha, which tend to contain more protein than rice.

    REMEMBER!

    # Foods high in meatless protein include tofu, eggs and those foods with soy or wheat gluten. Add these to your vegetarian grocery list.

    # Consider taking a daily multi-vitamin to supplement the iron your body might lack from not eating meat.

    # Avoid drinking fruit juices instead of eating fruits, as fruit juices do not contain much fiber.

    # Make sure you're choosing dairy products such as yogurt and cream cheese that do not contain gelatin, which is made from the bones and cartilage of animals and is therefore not vegetarian.
