Details of Greenbrier Classic announced: Appleby, Mickelson and Garcia to play among other top guns
The PGA (Professional Golf Association) tour officials announced the particulars of 2011 Greenbrier Classic on Monday, May 9th. The 35th event on the PGA circuit will take place at the Old White Course in White Sulphur Springs, West
Virginia.
The speculations regarding the change of venue vanished as the tour officials gave out the details of the tournament that takes place every year in Greenbrier. There was a widespread rumour regarding the change of venue prior to this announcement that clarified
all doubts.
A press conference was held at the Greenbrier resort to address the speculations in which Jim Justice, the owner of Greenbrier resort, said that it was an honour for them to host the second edition of Greenbrier Classic.
The announcement also clarified the purse of $6 million and the dates of the event, from July 28th to 31st, 2001. The event would carry 500 FedEx points and a winner’s share of $1.08 million.
The top guns of golf will be seen at the field, including seven of the top ten players on the Official World Golf Rankings. The most anticipated appearance is the defending champion, Stuart Appleby.
The Aussie committed with the tour officials and said that he was eager to make a comeback in the event that made him a nine-time PGA Tour winner. The pro made his debut with this event as he compiled a 59 in the final round and surged to victory.
Appleby carries a ball with an apple-bee made on it, as a good luck charm, in the tournament.
Phil Mickelson is next to Appleby and he committed with the tour officials during the onset of speculations about the change of venue. When asked to comment regarding his second appearance in the tournament, he replied, “My family and I are really excited
about coming to The Greenbrier this summer. My kids are already making lists of all the things they want to do while we're there, even though I'll be working”.
Apart from him, Sergio Garcia also joined the league. The Spaniard addressed a press conference in which he said, “I'm looking forward to next July. I know there have been some changes to the course and I'm looking forward to seeing it soon".
In addition to all the top guns of the world, the tournament will also see music artists, including the Black Eyed Peas, McGraw, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert perform for the residents of White Sulphur Springs.
