That's basically it for the details

  2. Hi there across the pond!  There is only one detail actually, and that is....  It is going to happen the beginning of next year.   You have two options:  get a new HV TV or buy one of the converter boxes that chages analog to digital for which you plug into your analog ( common ) TV set to receive the signal.   Otherwise your TV set will be useless.   I understand the boxes are available now and it might be a good idea to go ahead and get one...  before the MAD rush!

  3. You asked this in cameras and not TV. I dont know about the UK changeover otherwise I would help ya out. The chap above me assumed you were in the US.

  4. Hi Oliver.

Weymouth is within the Westcountry region which starts its digital switchover in April 2009 and will carry on until September 2009.

If you live in Weymouth or the surrounding areas you will probably receive your TV signal from the Weymouth transmitter.  This will be switching to digital on two dates in May 2009, these are 6th May for BBC One and Two and 20th May for all other stations.  This means that after this time you will need to have a digital receiver for each television and video recorder that you want to use.

There are many ways that you can switch to digital television, most of the new LCD and Plasma TV's come with a Freeview digital receiver already installed, as do some of the new DVD and hard disc drive recorders.  If you have an older TV or video recorder which does not have digital inbuilt you will need to buy a digital receiver to carry on using them.

You have four options for this:

Freeview - A set top box that you can use with your current TV/Video recorders start from around £17

Freesat - A new service which allows you to get a satalite service for a one off cost of the equiptment and installation, this also allows you to watch in HD if you have an HD receiver and television.

Sky - Sky services in the UK are digital and you can either take a Pay Once package for £75 which includes the equiptment and instalation, or you can take out a monthly subscription.

Cable - You can also get digital TV through cable for a monthly subscription fee.

If you are outside Weymouth these dates may be different, but digital.uk will be able to tell you from your postcode.  In some parts of Dorset it may be possible to receive signals from the West region transmitters.  The analogue signal in this area is due to be turned off in 2010.

However, I wouldn't panic. Digital UK will be giving you plenty of nitice on the run up to the switchover in your area.

I know that the reply is quite long for a short question, but hope it helps you understand more about the Digital Switchover.
