Question:

Detecting ABS brakes...?

My ex-GF is purchasing a cash car for her sister and she's very safety-conscious.

So I'm asking you all the same question she asked me.

How can you tell a vehicle has ABS brakes?

Looking at different versions of the same car, some have ABS, some don't, and some might have it but don't include it on the equipment list.

Of course, I like to say thank you in advance to those of you that offered up your time and answers.

  1. Check on sites like Edmunds.com and see what different models and trims came with.  That od take it for a ride and do a break check.  You'll know when they kick in.  It makes a moaning noise and you feel the breaks grabbing and letting go.

  2. Take the VIN number to a dealer for that make and ask them to run the specs.   Fastest,  easiest,  most accurate.

  3. If the car has ABS it should have this indicated on the dashboard in with the instruments. I think that this is a federal law. The reason for this is a car with ABS is braked by the driver differently than one without ABS. The difference can kill.

If you/she have any doubt, as the car dealer. His mechanic can look at the brake system and be able to tell. There should be a placard under the hood.

    Regards,

    Dad
