Detent cable (kick down cable) on a 1990 GMC Suburban

Recently had work done on my truck and the detent cable was replaced. It now seems to rev higher then it should before shifting, does this mean the cable needs more slack or more tension... it's simple enough to adjust...

  1. It needs more slack, it should not begin to engage until the throttle cable is 3/4 of the way fully engaged, it's a passing gear so it shouldn't engage unless the pedal is pressed almost to the floor.

  2. Dodge Man and Steve D are both correct good answers guys

  3. RESET CABLE TO FULL REAR POSITION THEN ROTATE THE THROTTLE TO THE WIDE OPEN POSITION IF IT STILL DOES NOT SHIFT RIGHT, ADD 1/8'' MORE FORWARD MOVEMENT TO THE CABLE

  4. Dodge man is right. If it doesn't work afterwards, mark the location adjust it one click tighter. If you're still having issues, adjust it one click looser than the marked position. Most times the accelerator trick does the job, but I have had to manually adjust them from time to time. Goodluck.

  5. If it's rev higher ,then you will need to loosen the cable-up.The best way is to turn the nut one or two turns , so you can get it just the way you want it.If that don't do it for you ,you might find a set s***w near by to ajust it down with.

  6. with the gas pedal all the way to the floor the detent cable should  be tight,i always tighten those and let the pedal adjust it,its made to slip until its at the right point, then it should shift right, good luck.
