  1. Yes, if you are enrolled in school and not attending your mom can be charged and she can send you to a facility if she chooses.  You could also be removed and sent to foster care.  Boarding school is another possibility.  Your mom could also go to jail.

Either she needs to be homeschooling you (with whatever paperwork your state requires filed with the appropriate agency) or you need to be in school.  There are no two ways about it.

Generally though, they will work with you if you are willing to go back and make a plan, sometimes that plan will include summer school, sometimes they will officially send you home for the rest of the year and restart you the next, but you need to make it official and legal whatever you do.

  2. Perhaps you need to post this in "primary & secondary" education.  This is the homeschooling forum.

Kids here aren't truant if they aren't attending school.  They'll be "home" anyway ;-).

Homeschoolers don't have a superintendent to answer to.

Your school can send you to a juvenile group home for truancy.  What your mom doesn't realize is that *she* will also get in trouble.

  3. Maybe you should tell you mom that you need serious intervention or you are setting yourself up for long-term failure.  It is still legally to homeschool so to avoid fines, court dates, embarassment, and you moving out of the home, she should consider her options.  Maybe she could do some research on homeschooling and at least give it a shot for your sake.  Have your mom/dad go to hslda.org and get information for your state and then get in contact with a local homeschooling group on how to proceed for you area.   You'll need to act fast but keep in school until you are taken out by your mother to avoid more trouble for you and her.  Once she withdraws you, its out of their hands.

Keep writing, reading, and learning no matter what or where you are because it will only benefit YOU.  Best of luck.

  4. Here's how it works in most states:

There is a limit to how many days of school a student can miss without being reported to the appropriate authorities.  If a parent does not send the child to school, then the parent is guilty of educational neglect, and if the situation is not remedied, then the child is put into foster care.  This is generally what happens if the child is in elementary school.  If the parent tries to get the child to go to school and the child will not, then this is truancy, and the child is in trouble, not the parent.  Generally there is some sort of effort to get the child to school by appointing a Juvenile Officer or Social Worker to monitor and threaten the child, but if this does not work - yes, the child will be put into some other facility.

Having said that, let me make a few comments to you personally.

First of all, you sound depressed, sweetie, and like you need some help.  Counseling might help, and maybe it would help if you went to a different school so you could make a new start.  Also, quite frankly, I've worked with truants before, and let me just guess - not only do you not go to school, but you also don't do your laundry or any cooking, and your room is a mess.  More than likely you are completely disobedient to your mother.  I would also guess that your mother was very young when you were born, and that you are probably 14 years old.  I could be wrong here, but that is the profile of the typical truant.

Second, you need to consider your future.  What do you plan to do with your life?  You might be able to get away now with lazing around doing nothing productive, but this will not last.  Right now you can avoid your responsibilities and still have a roof over your head and food to eat - but it is because you are a kid.  Just around the corner you will discover the world is very hard on people who will not work, and you will not have a place to live or food to eat if you do not work.  By the time you discover  you have BLOWN IT where your education is concerned, it will be too late to retrace your steps and redo things.  There are not many job opportunities for people with no education whatsoever.  You might think you can work at McDonald's. Well, probably not if you don't have a high school diploma or are in school, and even if you could, how long will that last?  Want to know why you don't see 40 yo's applying there eagerly?  Because WE ARE TOO OLD to be on our feet all day, but that is the life you are choosing when you choose to be lazy now.  You can either work now for the next 8-10 years and get a good education, and live easier and better for the next 50 years, or you can laze around the next 3 or 4 years and regret it for the rest of your life.

  5. Your mom can be charged and yes, you could go to a detention facility.  Quit being a lazy bum and go to school!
