Question:

Determining my indian heritage?

I was always told my great-grandmother was full blood indian, and was adopted from the reservation and brought to Texas at abt. age 10. I have found her and her family listed on the dawes rolls. Her card number is MCR5738. Under Misc. it says "FAUGHT TX". What does that mean? Would there be any mention of adoption in any of the records?

  1. Faught refers to either Faught, Texas or the the Faught family in Texas.

  2. no clue. why dont you ask her. or your parents or grand parents since your great-grandmother is probably dead.

  3. The town of Faught TX is in Lamar Co, NE of Paris. It's very possibly where she was placed for adoption. Sadly, taking children away from their tribes was an actual goal of the State. it was done under the idea that it would expedite assimilating Natives into White society. It was a tragedy. But if you've found her name in the Dawes Rolls, you're seriously in good shape. I'd start with the Tribal Council where she was listed and work out from there. You'd be surprised at how many records the tribes kept of the children removed from the reservations. Then go to the Lamar Co Clerk of the Court and see if they have records on her.
