Detroit Lions DE Cliff Avril says not all 53 players on roster are undisciplined - NFL News
Last weekend another Detroit Lions player was arrested by Police for driving under influence (DUI) making it the fourth such incident in which a Lions player got into trouble with the law.
These incidents are taking attention away from the franchise’s preparations for the 2012 season and many analysts believe that a lack of discipline is embedded in every Lions player.
There have also been allegations that the franchise is not disciplining its young players correctly leading to so many incidents this offseason of players being caught either drunk driving or possessing marijuana.
However, Detroit Lions defensive end, Cliff Avril, feels it is wrong to put all 53 Lions players in the same basket.
Speaking on ESPN he said that the actions of a few players are not grounds for the media to label the entire team as undisciplined.
He said:
"You can't label us by a few young guys getting in trouble."
Adding further he continued:
"You can't put that on the other 53 guys on the roster. That makes no sense. Obviously they are part of the team, but I don't think it's correct to put that on the other 53 guys who are on the roster."
Avril is currently waiting for the Lions to offer him a new long term deal. The Lions had earlier in the offseason put him on a franchise tender which the player is yet to sign.
The defensive end has not taken part in the minicamp or organised team activities with the Lions and it is still uncertain whether he will take part in training camp and sign the tender if a new deal is not close to being agreed.
Both parties have till July 16th to agree on a new contract failing which Avril will have to sign his tender in order to play in the 2012 season for Detroit.
Speaking about his contract situation and participation in training camp he said:
"If it comes to that, then we'll have to talk about the right thing to do.”
He was one of the Lions best players in defence and it is likely both parties will be able to reach a new contract soon.
