Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew impressed with undrafted free agents - NFL News
The Detroit Lions are not done with the drafts just yet as they continue to sign rookies who did not make the cut for other teams on free agent contracts.
The rookie training camp for the franchise will start from Thursday and the Lions have already signed up players such as Boise State University’s quarterback, Kellen Moore and Houston University receiver, Patrick Edwards.
General manager, Martin Mayhew speaking in a radio interview according to the team’s official website said about signing undrafted free agents.
“Those situations you’re definitely looking to fill a spot.”
Adding further he said.
“You want to find young players that can come in and help you, not only immediately, but as you build your team for the future.”
Quarterback, Kellen Moore had a lot of success with Boise State but draft experts were not confident over the youngster’s ability to play in the National Football League (NFL) due to his lack of height as well as concerns over his arm strength.
Mayhew though does not have any such concerns and praised the youngster’s record at college.
“The winningest quarterback ever, 50-3. The guy is very talented (and a) very cerebral quarterback and understands the game, son of a coach. He has a good arm and is very accurate. The guy is very talented and we were very fortunate to be able to get him.”
The general manager also went on to praise the addition of wide receiver, Patrick Edwards and looked impressed with his productivity in college.
The Lions had just two quarterbacks on their roster in the offseason before the addition of Moore. The youngster’s arrival will not threaten current quarterback, Matthew Stafford’s position in any way and he will compete with veteran, Shaun Hill for the
backup role.
Detroit brought in offensive tackle, Riley Reiff with their first pick. Reiff was picked 23rd overall by the franchise and it was the first time since 1992 that the Lions had brought in a player so late in the drafts.
This year the Lions are targeting the Super Bowl as their team continues to improve significantly and the addition of new players is likely to enhance the quality of the roster even further.
