Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford visits White House, excited by new draft picks - NFL News
Detroit Lions, quarterback, Matthew Stafford visited the White House on Thursday to promote a finance based football game which aims to increase the financial knowledge of young high school students.
Stafford was the leader of a team of high school students as he faced off against an opposing team led by Washington Redskins linebacker, London Fletcher.
The quarterback also talked to reporters after taking part in the event according to the
Detroit Free Press.
When asked when he believes he would visit the White House again as part of a Super Bowl winning Detroit Lions team, the quarterback said that the plan was to reach the Super Bowl and win it but he wouldn’t give a time frame as yet.
“That’s the plan. We don’t know what year that will be, but hopefully soon.”
The Lions in 2011-12 ended their playoff drought as Stafford performed wonderfully to take the franchise to a 10-6 record.
However, they were knocked out at the first hurdle by the New Orleans Saints but the team’s wonderful performances throughout the season have raised optimism in Detroit.
The quarterback also talked about the Lions draft this year and said he was excited by the new crop of players brought in by general manager, Martin Mayhew.
“I’m excited,” he said, “Any time we bring guys to the offensive side of the ball it’s exciting for me as a quarterback.”
Adding further he said.
“I’m excited to have all those guys, really and we picked up some undrafted free agents that I feel are really going to help us.”
Stafford also showed how to avoid controversies as he dodged a question over the punishments handed down by commissioner, Roger Goodell to Saints players for the bounty scandal.
“It’s a tough decision. It’s what the commissioner is paid to do, make tough decisions.”
Stafford along with wide receiver, Calvin Johnson were the bright lights last season as they led Detroit to an amazing run in the regular season.
They will be looking to get even better this year and the Lions are bound to improve as their talented young side continues to grow together.
It will not be surprising to see Detroit reach the Super Bowl in the coming years as the team has a bright future ahead.
