Detroit Lions WR Nate Burleson says team ready for Super Bowl - NFL News
The Detroit Lions are aiming high for the new season as the franchise looks to build on its successful season in 2011-12.
The Lions ended their playoff drought last year as it entered the wildcard rounds for the first time since 1999. The franchise has turned a corner from being the league’s punching bag into a playoff contender but that is not enough for wide receiver, Nate
Burleson.
Speaking to NFL.com the 30-year-old said that he and the team have higher expectations and their ultimate goal is reaching and winning the Super Bowl not just once but many times.
"We definitely got enough to do that,"
He also said that if the franchise keeps the spine of the team together which includes quarterback, Matthew Stafford, wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh for the long term the possibilities are endless.
"You don't go around piecing together a team, paying guys to just do OK. The ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl, and if he (Lewand) can keep the same core group of guys together, then we can make a run at the Super Bowl year after year. It's been done
before."
Detroit fans were buzzing at the end of the 2011-12 season after the franchise finally ended their playoff drought.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford remained injury free and was brilliant showcasing his wonderful talent which the Lions brought in with their 2009 number one draft pick as he combined brilliantly with star receiver, Calvin Johnson.
The Lions gave Johnson a new mega contract to keep him at the franchise for seven more years.
With the nucleus of the team in place for the long term the Lions are a team ready for bigger achievements than just the wildcard round.
Burleson also said that the team must maintain focus since reaching the playoffs is nothing more than a step towards the ultimate goal.
“A wild-card game in Detroit is great, you know what I mean, especially given the fact that there has been such a dark cloud over the city for so long. But we have to continue to reach for what everybody else wants, and that's a Super Bowl."
The new season will show if the Lions are ready to roar even louder.
