Detroit Lions and head coach Jim Schwartz agree on a new long term deal - NFL News
Finally the news came on Friday which Detroit Lions fans had been waiting for the whole offseason.
The Lions official website revealed citing sources that head coach, Jim Schwartz has agreed to a new long term deal with the franchise.
No details about the contract were given and Lions president, Tom Lewand confirmed later to the
Detroit Free Press that Schwartz indeed had signed a new deal with the franchise although he refused to go into details.
After an offseason replete with reports of Lions players being arrested for off the field incidents, some good news finally came out from the franchise.
Lewand said about the deal:
“I’ll confirm that we’ve agreed on a multiyear contract extension but, beyond that, we’ve been consistent all along that we’re not going to comment on his contract.”
He added further, that he will only release the details a day after Schwartz himself would talk about his new deal with the media:
“I’ll confirm that we’ve agreed on a multiyear contract extension but, beyond that, we’ve been consistent all along that we’re not going to comment on his contract.”
This is an important move for the Lions who have just recently started to assert themselves in the National Football League.
Schwartz took over the franchise after a season in which it failed to deliver a single win in the entire regular season and slowly started to work on rebuilding the franchise.
The head coach’s first year ended with a 2-14 record in 2009 but improvements to the roster continued and in his second season Schwartz delivered a 6-10 finish.
Last year saw the fruits of the head coach’s labours as the Lions went 10-6 in 2011 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
With some brilliant young talent in the roster in the form of quarterback, Matthew Stafford, Defensive Tackle, Ndamukong Suh and wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, the future of Detroit looks secure for years to come.
Now Schwartz will look to convert the Lions into a playoff team and he will hope that his new deal would come to an end with him delivering a Super Bowl championship to the franchise.
