Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham defends DT Ndamukong Suh – NFL News
Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has defended defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who was fined $30,000 by the National Football League (NFL) for hitting Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in Week 12 game.
According to the Associated Press, Cunningham shared his views about the incident on Friday and said:
"I coach football for living, I've done it for a long time. All kinds of things happen. He was trying to make a play and nobody talks about the guard tackling him on the way to the quarterback. We get no call; they get a call -- or he gets a fine, whatever
it was."
He added:
“I agree whoever said it on national TV that he has to have eyes in the back of his head. That's the first thing I said. I thought it was ridiculous. I'm so tired of having to say things like that, but it's true.”
Suh hit his foot on Schaub’s groin muscles, thus causing him injury. Suh did not get suspended because the league could not determine whether the hit was intentional.
Schaub gave harsh remarks about Suh in his postgame press conference. According to him, Suh is not that type of person who can be “Houston Texan-worthy”.
Cunningham believed that it is humiliating if someone gives such statements about another player or team. He said of Schaub’s statement:
"And, you know, I'm sure Matt's a great guy and he got caught up in the emotions. And I'll forgive him for it -- this time."
Suh was also suspended for two games last season when he hit Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith on arm.
This incident has affected his reputation badly and he is being tagged as a dirty player.
Suh was drafted by Lions in 2010 and signed a five-year contract with them. When his contract ends, he will have to prove himself worthy enough to gain a contract extension or get a new contract from any other team, but his bad reputation might block his
way.
